The Court of the Air

The Court of the Air by Stephen Hunt reminds me of two other books, both of which I love, so let's just get to the point that although I'm not finished with it yet, at the moment I'm recommending it pretty highly.

First- The Golden Compass. The same sort of setting, pseudopast with alternate or futuristic additions, similar aged protagonists, and an equally dark but more omnipotent organization.

Secondly - these books that I don't remember the name of, about cities that move around and eat other cities. I guess it's the same kind of steampunk feel, almost Neil-Gaiman-but-not-quite. Whenever I read Neil Gaiman I feel like he is just really lucky when his writing or stories turn out well. I'm sure that's vast misunderstanding of mine, and he works really hard to get things right, but that's how it comes across to me. Fortunate more than intentional.

Anyway! Back to string classes, pointers, and idiot-styled Python.

Conflux

So, I played magic at a, you know, place for the first time last Friday. Specifically Eudemonia in Berkeley, and it was pretty ok. For the price and the experience, I'm still into playing at home instead. But I opened up my first pack of Conflux and saw

Ok, back to coding! And maybe some Murakami. I'm near the end of Sputnik Sweetheart, and I've gotten to this section of kind of bizarre "Why must we as humans be so alone?" rambling that I don't quite know what to make of.

Man Walks Into a Room

A little background. I love Jonathan Safran Foer. Everything is illuminated is one of my favorite books, period. I've given it to my whole family and basically every other person I like to read.

When I read History of Love, i was likewise completely blown away. I thought, Nicole Krauss, you are a genius of equal stature to your husband, and also i like your hair.

But just like the fact that I love Interpol doesn't mean I ever want to hear Joy Division ever- Man Walks Into a Room is a huge disappointment.
The premise is interesting, but there is a certain style of writing about male protaganists that really bothers me- kind of "He's not a good person, in fact he is horrible all the time to everyone, but it is in this totally dude way, so maybe it's just that all men are secretly awful and how would you even know, woman reader?"

Ugh. Can't wait to be done and never look at this book again.

So today I fixed up a few things for MS, the second-to-last run from 2006. I think it's done now, despite being a horrible amalgam of everything one can do wrong while observing. And I got to use snid a bit more. I also finished up most of OU, and started the log for MZ, read some of Alex's review, and did some administrative nonsense. Yay!

I wish there was Wikipedia: Evolution, which would sound like a scifi film and that's cool, and which would describe how characteristics of various plants and animals are helpful to them. For example: the pistachio page would explain why they are so green. And the butternut squash page would explain why the seed cavity is so small compared to other squashes. Cool, huh?

it has been forever since i have posted here. I hope there was not a competition going, because if there was i am totally destroyed. anyway, sorry, valued readers. i think the deal has been that i a) kind of have friends now and b) entered some sort of post-marathon wasteland where i only wanted to only ever sleep. but now i have a few days off, not much to do, a Renewed Sense of Purpose, and here i am.
i think i have reached the point of definitely needing to figure out this line ratio business, and that means thinking about idl and how i suck at life. cool! i'll get back to you.

I have finally answered that age-old question, "Is my life a romantic comedy?"
Well, yes. I am a commitment-phobic (god, least favorite phrase ever, so my apologies lovely readers) dude, and capital A Astronomy is my totally under-appreciated lady friend. You've seen The Last Kiss (wait, is that even the right title? and no, you haven't), so you know where this is going- with nothing either that wrong or that right, I am totally susceptible to the charms of that sultry sea turtle that I met while totally smashed at a friend's party. Inevitably, though, I realize my mistake and a chilly gloom settles around me while I pace the streets, forlorn, and listening to the Counting Crows all the damn time (wait, maybe I mean Cruel Intentions).
I'm sorry, baby. I'm on my way to the airport.
